Coral Reefs
What is the UNEP Coral Reef Unit?

The United Nations Environment Programme Coral Reef Unit (CRU) was established by the UNEP Executive Director on 1 December 2000 within the Division of Environmental Conventions (DEC), in close association with the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA). It is now located in Cambridge, England, at the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, under the responsibility of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI).

PURPOSE

The Coral Reef Unit is helping to lead international effort to save the planet's threatened coral reefs. It works actively with international partners around the world in a concerted effort to reverse coral reef degradation and to increase international, national and local support for coral reef conservation and sustainable use. It is responsible for UNEP's participation in the International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) and other international programmes, and provides the administrative base for the ICRAN Coordinating Unit. The Coral Reef Unit has occasionally published a web newsletter: bREEFings.

For further information, see Objectives and Strategy of the Coral Reef Unit and some progress reports. An new web page for the Coral Reef Unit has been established at UNEP headquarters, and will eventually replace this site if it is updated regularly: http://corals.unep.org/.
